Directed by Steve McQueen, the landmark slavery drama stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as a gratis man kidnapped and sold to slaveowners in 19th-century Louisiana. It was based on the bestselling memoir by Solomon Northup, first published in 1853. 12 Years a Slave follows McQueen's laurels-winning dramas Hunger and Shame, and was produced by amidst others Brad Pitt'southward Program B outfit. Pitt also takes a small only pivotal office as abolitionist carpenter Samuel Bass.
Every bit a gang of cast members and crew took to the stage of the Dolby theatre in Los Angeles, Pitt came to the microphone outset to say that the film could not have been made without the "indomitable" McQueen.
After thanking a long listing of people, the director dedicated the Oscar to the 21 million people still indelible slavery in the world today, maxim: "Everyone deserves non but to survive, but to alive."
